ABOUT THE TOOL
Clearer numbers
before you order.
Yardfill helps people estimate soil, mulch, compost and other loose fill by volume. It combines simple measurements with the actual purchasing conditions on your supplier’s quote.
What the planner does
Add rectangular or round areas, enter the depth of material you are adding, and choose an optional extra allowance. Yardfill converts the total into litres and cubic metres and rounds up to whole bags. The optional cost comparison includes both delivery charges, a minimum charged bulk volume and a supplier’s order increment.
There are no live retailer prices in the calculator. Enter the bag volume and current prices from the supplier you are considering. Compare equivalent materials with tax and delivery handled consistently.
How calculations are checked
Rectangular volume is length × width × depth. Round volume is π × radius² × depth. Dimensions are converted to metres before calculation; a cubic metre contains 1,000 litres. Orders round upward to a whole bag or whole purchasing increment.
Checks include metric conversions, circular areas, delivery charges, minimum orders, decimal rounding boundaries and invalid measurements. The explanations on this site show worked examples so you can check the reasoning yourself.
For a landscape supplier’s explanation of the units, see Centenary Landscaping’s estimating guide.
What an estimate cannot tell you
Measured containers may taper, garden beds may be uneven, and material may settle. The planner does not recommend a soil blend or depth for particular plants, convert volume into weight, or assess a vehicle’s carrying capacity. Check these matters separately before purchase.
The calculator estimates a straight-sided rectangular or circular space. For irregular shapes, divide the space into smaller areas you can measure. Use internal measurements and the depth of the layer you actually need.
